Stone Strong Walls for 17 Mile Rocks Road Improvements

Posted on: November 1st, 2015
Newly completed Stone Strong Walls

Stone Strong Walls used on the 17 Mile Rocks Road improvements

17 Mile Rocks Road is a sub-arterial road that links the ever-growing Centenary suburbs of Brisbane with the inner west. As a result of new residential development in the area, 17 Mile Rocks Rd was unable to cope with increased traffic volumes. This was particularly the case at the Duporth Avenue intersection.

The Brisbane City Council undertook a traffic improvement program that required the road to be realigned to ease congestion. Safety would be improved by increasing the length of the merge lane.  New pedestrian pathways and a bicycle lane were also incorporated in the project.

The original system specified in the tender documents was a geo-grid reinforced soil /small segmental block design. Stone Strong Walls – the Big Block system – was offered by Concrib as a design & construct alternative engineered solution.  The Stone Strong retaining wall system put forward by Concrib’s designers was a near-vertical Gravity Design.  It covers a total wall area of approximately 700 square metres and has a maximum wall height of 5.0 metres.

Stone Strong Walls save time, look great.

With the Stone Strong system, we were able to greatly reduce the amount of excavation required for the select –fill reinforced soil zone as well as embedment depth of the small-block system, yielding a substantial saving in both time and excavation volume.  The great aesthetics of Stone Strong’s chiselled-granite facing also played a part in the selection of the retaining wall.

The bottom line was a great looking wall, fit for purpose, supplied and constructed by Concrib with a cost saving to the Brisbane City Council. The only delays experienced were due to wet weather; the client was satisfied with the finished result; the traffic is now flowing smoothly and merging is safer.

Retaining Wall Design: Component Quality is Important

Posted on: April 17th, 2015

Brookwater Crib Wall Project

When a designer issues a design certificate (a Form 15 in Queensland), the design is being certified against a specified criteria, for example AS 4678, Earth Retaining Structures code.

A core requirement of this code is design life; for residential retaining walls it is 60 years.

Often overlooked is the supporting criteria that references specific codes. These codes cover the quality and manufacture of the components that make up a particular retaining wall system.

An example is our Concrib Concrete Sleeper Wall System consisting of reinforced concrete sleeper beams and either hot-dipped galvanized steel posts or reinforced concrete posts.

For this system we must ensure that the components are compliant with the relevant codes:

  • AS 3600 for Concrete Structures
  • AS 4678 for Hot-Dipped Galvanizing
  • AS 4100 for Fabricated Steel Structures, and
  • AS 1554 for Structural Steel Welding.

The certifying engineer should always ensure that the structural design complies with the code, as well as the chain of supply used to fabricate or manufacture the wall components.

Here at Concrib, we operate a Quality Management System compliant with ISO9001:2008. This ensures we can supply all relevant documentation regarding certificates for structural steel, concrete, galvanizing, reinforcement etc.

We are also a Queensland Department of Transport & Main Roads-approved pre-caster of retaining wall products.

This provides peace of mind for both the designer and end user in regards to the retaining wall complying with Australian Standards.

Concrib proud to be a sponsor of Qld Transport Infrastructure Conference

Posted on: March 26th, 2015

Mark 5 – 6 May 2015 in your diary.

That’s the date of the 6th Annual Queensland Transport Infrastructure Conference and with over $18 billion in projects to be delivered before 2018, it promises to be one of the most informative conferences ever.

As an Associate Sponsor, Concrib will be at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on both days to help the 200 expected delegates keep up to date with all the exciting new transport infrastructure projects, and aspects such as best practice – particularly on the subject of engineered retaining walls.

This “meeting of the minds” is not to be missed.

During the two days you’ll enjoy presentations by key public sector and private sector speakers, plus:

  • find out more about the next major projects in transport infrastructure for Queensland
  • get invaluable insights into the State’s focus towards delivering better transport infrastructure
  • hear about the challenges facing the QLD Government such as coping with an ever-expanding population
  • discover how the industry is financing projects in rail, roads, ports, airports
  • network with senior executives from government and business

Brand-new retaining wall at Bethania development

Posted on: September 28th, 2012

Project Stats:

  • 2,500 square face metres of walling
  • Maximum wall height 9 metres, average height 6 metres
  • 500 linear metres of reinforced concrete footing
  • 3,200 tonnes of Stone Strong precast modular blocks
  • 18,000 square metres of high-strength Geogrid soil reinforcement
  • 1,600 cubic metres of drainage aggregate within the block voids

Concrib is in the final stages of construction of one of our largest Stone Strong retaining walls to date, at the new industrial/commercial site at Bethania. The rapidly growing population in the Bethania area has created demand for big-box hardware outlets and new supermarkets — and this site, covering approximately 8 hectares, was the ideal location for this kind of development.

Unique interlocking blocks were the ideal solution

Concrib was engaged by the main civil contractor, CATCON, to provide a complete package, including:

  • Design
  • Construction
  • Certification

After extensive design assessments and modelling, including a global stability analysis, carried out by Concrib’s designers (Geoinventions Consulting Services) Stone Strong interlocking blocks were chosen as the ideal earth stabilisation solution for this
project. With 2,500m2 of walling, some of it 9 metres in height, these walls have turned out to be impressive structures. The wall has been built with a face batter of 18 vertical : 1 horizontal, in order to fully maximise the land value at the Bethania site.

Built to last

Combining high-quality purpose engineered walling with pleasing aesthetics, Stone Strong
is an attractive, affordable earth stabilisation solution that has been engineered to last. Close dimensional tolerances, robust structural design and 40mPa concrete allows for a 100-year design life within a broad range of applications and engineering settings.
